Sanni Franssi Completes Season-Long Loan Move to Sunderland Women
Sunderland Women have strengthened their attacking options with the signing of experienced Finnish striker Sanni Franssi, who arrives on a season-long loan from Women’s Super League outfit London City Lionesses. The Black Cats have secured the services of the prolific forward as they continue building a squad capable of competing at the highest level during the upcoming campaign.
Franssi brings with her a wealth of experience gained across some of Europe’s top leagues. Throughout her career, the 31-year-old has established herself as a consistent goalscorer and an accomplished international, making her one of the most experienced additions to Sunderland’s squad in recent years.
The Finnish international enjoyed a successful spell in Spain before joining London City Lionesses. During five seasons with Real Sociedad, she became one of the club’s most dependable attacking players, scoring 39 goals in 162 appearances across all competitions. Her performances in Liga F earned widespread recognition for her intelligent movement, clinical finishing, and relentless work ethic.
Franssi’s football journey began in her native Finland, where she developed through the ranks at VJS before moving to PK-35 Vantaa. It was there that she first showcased her impressive eye for goal, netting an outstanding 86 goals in just 134 appearances across both clubs. Those performances paved the way for opportunities abroad and launched a career that has taken her across several of Europe’s strongest women’s leagues.
Over the years, Franssi has represented some of the continent’s most respected clubs, including FC Zürich in Switzerland, Italian giants Juventus, and Danish champions Fortuna Hjørring. Across those successful spells, she added another 52 goals to her career tally while collecting valuable experience in high-pressure domestic and European competitions.
Internationally, Franssi has also enjoyed an outstanding career with Finland. Having earned 92 senior caps, she has become one of her country’s most experienced players, representing the national team in numerous qualification campaigns and major international tournaments. Her leadership and experience are expected to be major assets for Sunderland both on and off the pitch.
Speaking after completing the move, Franssi expressed her excitement about joining the Black Cats and beginning a new chapter in England.

Head Coach Mel Reay also welcomed the signing, praising the Finnish forward’s quality and versatility. According to Reay, Franssi possesses all the attributes needed to thrive in the Championship, including intelligent movement, relentless pressing, sharp finishing, and the ability to disrupt opposing defences.
The Sunderland boss believes the experienced striker can produce decisive moments throughout the campaign, whether by creating opportunities for teammates or finishing chances herself. Reay also emphasized that Franssi’s experience of competing for major clubs in several European leagues will provide invaluable guidance for the younger members of the squad.
