Kentucky may have lost the race to land five-star phenom Tyran Stokes, but the Wildcats could ultimately be in a stronger position because of it.
When Stokes, the nation’s No. 1 recruit, committed to Kansas earlier this year, many Kentucky supporters viewed it as a major setback for head coach Mark Pope. The Jayhawks’ combination of tradition, coaching reputation, and NIL resources ultimately proved too much to overcome.
However, there is growing belief that missing on Stokes allowed Kentucky to build a deeper and more balanced roster. Rather than committing a significant portion of its NIL budget to one superstar, the Wildcats strengthened multiple positions, giving Pope greater flexibility heading into the 2026-27 season.
The benefits became apparent shortly after Stokes chose Kansas. Kentucky secured the return of Malachi Moreno while also adding standout transfer Milan Momcilovic, creating one of the most intriguing frontcourt combinations in college basketball. It’s widely believed that assembling both players would have been far more difficult if the Wildcats had invested heavily in Stokes.
Momcilovic, in particular, is viewed as an ideal fit for Pope’s perimeter-oriented offensive system, while Moreno provides size, physicality, and interior presence. Together, they give Kentucky a level of depth that could prove more valuable over the course of the season than relying on a single elite freshman.
Although Stokes remains one of the country’s premier prospects and is expected to make an immediate impact at Kansas, Kentucky appears to have assembled the more complete roster. ESPN’s early preseason rankings even placed the Wildcats ahead of the Jayhawks, reflecting confidence in Pope’s overall squad.
Kansas also added talented newcomers around Stokes, including highly regarded guard Taylen Kinney, but Kentucky’s work in the transfer portal has received considerably more praise. The Wildcats landed one of the nation’s best transfer classes, highlighted by Momcilovic and several other highly rated additions, while Kansas’ portal haul has been viewed as less impactful by comparison.
That added depth could play a major role when Kentucky and Kansas meet in the Champions Classic on November 10. Stokes has the talent to take over games with his scoring ability, but if Kentucky can contain him defensively, the Wildcats’ superior rotation may give them the edge.
Instead of viewing Stokes’ decision as a recruiting defeat, some now see it as an opportunity that allowed Pope to construct a more balanced team capable of competing for championships.
Kentucky Already Looking Ahead to Another Five-Star Target
With the 2026 recruiting cycle largely settled, Kentucky has shifted its attention to the future, and one of its biggest priorities appears to be five-star forward Paul Osaruyi.
The athletic 6-foot-10 prospect is considered one of the top players in the 2027 recruiting class thanks to his combination of size, explosiveness, and versatility. Kentucky is reportedly working to bring him to campus, and the Wildcats are expected to be firmly involved in his recruitment.
Osaruyi has drawn interest from several major programs, including West Virginia, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, and North Carolina. At the moment, West Virginia is viewed as an early contender, but the recruitment remains wide open.
Known for his powerful finishes at the rim, rebounding ability, and physical style of play, Osaruyi possesses the tools that project well to both the college and professional levels. His ability to run the floor, attack the basket, and dominate inside makes him one of the most coveted frontcourt prospects in the country.
Should Kentucky eventually secure his commitment, Osaruyi could form an exciting partnership with fellow five-star recruit Ryan Hampton. The pairing would give Pope another elite foundation as he continues building Kentucky into a national title contender.
Landing another marquee recruit would also reinforce the momentum Pope has created on the recruiting trail and further strengthen confidence in his long-term vision for the Wildcats.
