As the MLB trade deadline approaches, uncertainty has settled over the St. Louis Cardinals clubhouse after the team shifted from playoff hopefuls to likely sellers following a disappointing stretch after the All-Star break.
Veteran relief pitcher Ryne Stanek acknowledged that speculation surrounding potential trades has become a regular topic among teammates. Speaking during an interview with MLB Network, Stanek said players have been asking him what to expect, given his experience with multiple trade deadlines throughout his career.
Although the Cardinals now appear focused on selling, Stanek reflected on the excitement that comes when a team chooses to strengthen its roster instead.
“Adding reinforcements gives everyone a lift,” Stanek explained. “It creates fresh energy because the team knows it’s making a serious push toward its goal. Those additions can really boost morale.”
Only a few weeks ago, St. Louis looked capable of competing for a postseason berth. However, a poor run of results after the All-Star break dropped the club below the .500 mark, forcing management to prioritize its long-term future over immediate success.
According to league reports, the Cardinals are willing to listen to offers for several established players, including Stanek, Dustin May, and Lars Nootbaar, while younger cornerstones such as JJ Wetherholt and Jordan Walker are expected to remain part of the organization’s future plans.
Stanek understands both sides of the trade deadline. He has experienced the excitement of teams adding talent for a playoff run, and now he finds himself among the players who could be moved to a contender.
Despite the Cardinals’ struggles this season, Stanek has continued to showcase one of the hardest fastballs in baseball, complemented by an effective slider, splitter, and sweeper. His ability to generate strikeouts makes him an appealing bullpen option for teams looking to strengthen their relief corps ahead of the postseason.
If St. Louis ultimately trades the veteran reliever, it would align with the club’s strategy of acquiring future assets while giving playoff contenders an experienced late-inning arm for the stretch run.
