Former St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar fought back tears as he bid an emotional farewell to the organization that launched his major league career following his trade to the Arizona Diamondbacks just before the MLB trade deadline.
In a heartfelt message to Cardinals fans, Nootbaar reflected on the journey that began when St. Louis selected him in the eighth round of the 2018 MLB Draft. He expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support he received throughout his time with the club, recalling memorable milestones such as the team’s remarkable 17-game winning streak in 2021 and the National League Central title-winning season in 2022.
Nootbaar acknowledged that the Cardinals fanbase embraced him from the beginning despite arriving as an overlooked prospect. He described St. Louis as a place that became much more than just the city where he played baseball, saying the community always made him feel valued and welcomed.
The 28-year-old admitted the trade was especially difficult because St. Louis had become his home. Having spent his entire professional career with the Cardinals and even putting down roots by purchasing a home in the city, leaving the only organization he had ever known was an emotional experience. He thanked fans once again, saying their support meant far more to him than he could ever express.
The Cardinals dealt Nootbaar to Arizona in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Daniel Eagen, left-hander Sandro Santana, and a player to be named later. The move was part of a larger deadline reshaping that also included trades involving pitchers Dustin May and JoJo Romero.
Nootbaar debuted with St. Louis in 2021 and spent six seasons with the franchise. Injuries repeatedly interrupted his career, including offseason surgery on both heels that delayed his 2026 debut until June. In 48 games this season, he hit .234 with three home runs and 16 RBIs.
While his statistics were solid, Nootbaar’s greatest impact may have been the connection he built with Cardinals fans. His energetic personality, popularity in Japan, and contributions to St. Louis’ 2022 division championship made him one of the franchise’s most beloved players during his tenure.
Now with the Diamondbacks, Nootbaar will look to stay healthy and help Arizona strengthen its push for a National League Wild Card berth while beginning the next chapter of his MLB career.
