Jordan Walker Day-to-Day as Cardinals Slip in MLB’s Post-Deadline Power Rankings
The St. Louis Cardinals received mixed news on Tuesday as star outfielder Jordan Walker was scratched from the lineup with inflammation in his right knee while the club also dropped in MLB’s first Power Rankings following the 2026 trade deadline.
Walker was removed shortly before first pitch against the New York Yankees after experiencing increased discomfort during pregame warmups. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol described the injury as day-to-day and expressed optimism that the 24-year-old could return to action for Wednesday’s series finale.
According to Marmol, Walker has been managing intermittent soreness in the knee for some time. The inflammation became more noticeable as he loosened up before the game, particularly after putting stress on the joint while running the bases. As a precaution, the Cardinals chose not to use him in Tuesday’s 2-0 loss.
With Walker unavailable, Nelson Velázquez entered the lineup and went 1-for-4. Walker had played a key role in Monday’s 13-7 victory, collecting two hits and scoring a run.
Despite the minor setback, Walker is enjoying the finest campaign of his major league career. The slugging outfielder is batting .285 with 22 home runs and 81 RBIs, and further boosted his national profile by capturing the T-Mobile Home Run Derby title during All-Star festivities in July.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals experienced a notable decline in MLB.com’s latest Power Rankings, falling from 14th to 20th after an active trade deadline that reshaped the roster.
St. Louis opted to become sellers by trading Dustin May and JoJo Romero to the Milwaukee Brewers while also sending fan-favorite outfielder Lars Nootbaar to the Arizona Diamondbacks. In return, the organization prioritized long-term growth by acquiring several promising prospects, including highly regarded outfield talents Alexander Frias and Josiah Ragsdale.
Although the club’s disappointing July played a major role in the decision to sell, MLB.com noted that the Cardinals remain one of the more intriguing teams to monitor over the final two months of the season. The organization is now balancing its hopes of staying competitive while continuing to build for the future with an influx of young talent.
With Walker’s health being closely monitored and several new prospects entering the system, the remainder of the 2026 season could prove pivotal in shaping the Cardinals’ direction heading into next year.
