The Philadelphia Phillies’ decision to acquire four-time All-Star Luis Arraez before the trade deadline has created an unexpected dilemma involving the club’s defensive alignment.
To get Arraez into his preferred position at second base, Philadelphia has made several changes across the diamond. Bryce Harper is moving back to the outfield, Alec Bohm is shifting to first base, and Bryson Stott is moving from second to third.
While the Phillies appear comfortable with the new arrangement, the decision has already drawn criticism from some prominent baseball analysts. The biggest question centers on whether Bohm should remain part of the everyday lineup at all.
According to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury, Arraez has experience playing first base but prefers second, which influenced the Phillies’ decision to make several positional adjustments. Stott will take over at third, while Bohm moves across the infield to first base and Harper returns to right field.
However, The Athletic’s Keith Law believes Philadelphia could have handled the situation differently.
Law argued that the Phillies should have considered moving Stott to third and installing Arraez at second while taking Bohm out of the starting lineup. In his view, that would have been preferable to putting Harper back in the outfield, particularly considering the additional demands that could be placed on Harper’s surgically repaired elbow.
Law was also highly critical of Bohm’s recent performance, questioning whether the veteran infielder should continue receiving regular playing time.
He pointed out that Bohm is entering free agency after the season and is earning $10.2 million this year. Given his recent production, Law questioned whether Bohm still has meaningful trade value and suggested that Philadelphia has little incentive to keep him in the lineup if his performance remains below expectations.
The comments have generated plenty of discussion among baseball observers, with analysts such as Ben Verlander and Mitch Rupert also taking notice of the debate.
For now, however, the Phillies do not appear ready to make such a dramatic change. The club seems committed to its current plan, with Bohm expected to handle first base, Stott moving to third and Harper returning to right field.
Whether that alignment ultimately proves to be the right decision could become one of the more intriguing storylines for Philadelphia during the stretch run. The Arraez acquisition has strengthened the Phillies offensively, but how the club manages the defensive ripple effects could have just as much impact on its postseason ambitions.
