The St. Louis Cardinals have made two important pitching roster moves ahead of their pivotal three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies, with the club placing Andre Pallante on the 15-day injured list and recalling Ryan Fernandez from Triple-A.
The Cardinals announced Friday that Pallante was placed on the IL with right elbow inflammation, retroactive to August 18. The move comes at an unfortunate time for St. Louis, which is battling to stay in the National League Wild Card race.
Pallante has been one of the Cardinals’ more dependable starters this season, posting a 3.57 ERA across 24 outings. His absence creates another challenge for a team entering a critical stretch of the season.
Pallante Heads to the Injured List
The Cardinals are taking a cautious approach with Pallante’s elbow issue. While the injury is not believed to involve structural damage, the decision to place him on the injured list allows the right-hander time to recover without risking a more serious problem.
Pallante was scheduled to pitch during the Phillies series, but St. Louis will now have to rearrange its rotation.
The Cardinals are particularly hoping the injury does not linger, given Pallante’s importance to their pitching staff and their postseason ambitions.
Ryan Fernandez Returns to St. Louis
To replace Pallante on the roster, the Cardinals recalled right-handed reliever Ryan Fernandez from Triple-A Memphis.
Fernandez has already appeared in 11 games for St. Louis this season and has been effective when given the opportunity, producing a 2.70 ERA during his time with the Major League club.
His return gives manager Oliver Marmol another arm to work with as the Cardinals attempt to navigate Pallante’s absence.
Fernandez could become especially valuable if the Cardinals’ replacement starters are unable to work deep into games.
Cardinals Enter Critical Phillies Series
The timing of the move could hardly be more significant.
St. Louis entered the series at 66-63, still within the National League Wild Card picture. Philadelphia, meanwhile, came into the matchup with a 70-58 record and is one of the teams ahead of the Cardinals in the postseason race.
That makes the three-game series more than just another set of games on the schedule. For St. Louis, it represents an opportunity to gain ground directly against one of the teams it is chasing.
The series opener is scheduled for Friday night in Philadelphia, with first pitch set for 6:40 p.m. ET.
A Test for the Cardinals’ Pitching Depth
Losing Pallante now puts additional pressure on the Cardinals’ pitching depth.
The organization will need Fernandez and the rest of the bullpen to help absorb the workload while the rotation adjusts. At the same time, St. Louis will be hoping Pallante’s elbow responds quickly enough for him to return without complications.

With the postseason race tightening, every game matters.
For now, the Cardinals’ message is clear: Pallante is sidelined, Fernandez is back, and St. Louis must find a way to survive a major pitching setback while facing one of its most important opponents of the season.
