The Atlanta Braves continue to be linked to Los Angeles Angels shortstop Zach Neto, with the possibility of an offseason deal emerging as an intriguing storyline for the club.
Neto was one of the more notable names connected to trade discussions before the Aug. 3 deadline, but the Angels ultimately kept the young shortstop. MLB reported that Los Angeles was willing to discuss Neto before the deadline, despite his remaining years of team control.
Now, the Braves have resurfaced as a potential destination.
Atlanta’s interest makes sense given its uncertainty at shortstop. The Braves recently optioned rookie Jim Jarvis, while Mauricio Dubón has handled multiple positions. That situation could leave the organization looking for a more established long-term answer at the position.
Neto would represent a significant upgrade if Atlanta could convince the Angels to part with him. The 25-year-old has established himself as an impactful offensive shortstop, combining power and speed while providing the Braves with another controllable piece for the future.
His 2026 season has also strengthened his case. Neto recently erupted for five hits and seven RBIs in an 18-3 victory over Houston, including his 21st home run of the season. He was subsequently named American League Player of the Week.
The biggest obstacle could be the asking price.
Because Neto is under team control well beyond the 2026 season, the Angels would have little reason to move him without receiving a substantial return. During the summer trade discussions, reports indicated that Los Angeles could demand a major prospect package for its star shortstop.
For Atlanta, that could mean surrendering some of its most valuable young talent. One proposed framework centered on pitching prospect JR Ritchie and highly regarded outfield prospect Eric Hartman, although that was a speculative trade concept rather than a reported agreement between the clubs.
There is also an important distinction between the deadline rumors and the current situation. Neto was not traded at the deadline and remains with the Angels, meaning any potential Braves pursuit would now be something to monitor for the offseason rather than an immediate deadline move.
Still, the Braves’ reported interest is understandable. Adding a young, powerful shortstop who can contribute immediately while remaining under control for multiple seasons would fit Atlanta’s desire to remain competitive while maintaining a strong core.
Whether the Angels would actually consider moving Neto again remains the biggest question.
For now, Braves fans can expect his name to remain part of the club’s potential offseason trade conversation. If Atlanta decides that shortstop is an area requiring a major upgrade, Neto could become one of the most fascinating names to watch when trade discussions heat up again.
