<\/p>\nAfter weeks of speculation surrounding a possible reunion with former Phillies reliever Jeff Hoffman, Philadelphia ultimately couldn’t get a deal done before the trade deadline passed. Instead, the Minnesota Twins landed the former All-Star, finally finding the bullpen replacement they’ve been searching for since losing Jhoan Duran last summer.<\/p>\n
Philadelphia did make moves to improve its relief corps earlier in the day. The Phillies acquired left-hander Brooks Raley from the New York Mets and also added strikeout-heavy reliever Caleb Kilian as part of their trade involving Luis Arraez. Both pitchers are expected to provide important innings during the stretch run.<\/p>\n
Even so, missing out on Hoffman stings. He was a dominant member of Philadelphia’s bullpen over two seasons, posting a 2.28 ERA across 122 appearances. His production has remained strong this season, too, with a 2.49 FIP and a 34.9% strikeout rate.<\/p>\n
Hoffman would have been an especially attractive addition because of Brad Keller’s season-ending elbow surgery. Instead, Philadelphia will have to rely on Raley, Duran and the rest of its bullpen to handle the most important late-game situations.<\/p>\n
The Twins paid a significant price to acquire Hoffman, surrendering pitching prospects John Klein and Dasan Hill. That package may help explain why Philadelphia wasn’t able to complete a deal for the veteran reliever.<\/p>\n
The Phillies already have limited depth in their pitching pipeline, and that situation became even more challenging after top prospect Ramon Marquez was sent to Minnesota as the centerpiece of the Arraez-Kilian trade.<\/p>\n
Given those circumstances, it was understandable that president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski wasn’t willing to sacrifice additional young pitching just to bring in another reliever.<\/p>\n
Philadelphia also has a capable replacement for the setup role Keller leaves behind in Raley. The veteran lefty has posted a 1.96 ERA over 45 appearances this season, giving the Phillies another reliable option in the late innings.<\/p>\n
The Phillies also don’t have the same need for a closer that Minnesota does. Jhoan Duran remains firmly established in the ninth inning and has been outstanding, producing a 1.20 FIP while converting 24 saves this season.<\/p>\n
Kilian shouldn’t be overlooked as merely a secondary piece of the Arraez trade, either. Once regarded as a premier starting pitching prospect, he was originally acquired as the centerpiece of the Giants’ return for Kris Bryant in 2021. San Francisco transitioned him into a relief role this season, and the results have been encouraging.<\/p>\n

His 10.4% walk rate is a potential concern, but his underlying numbers remain appealing. Kilian owns a 3.33 expected ERA and a 3.59 FIP, while his 27.5% strikeout rate shows his ability to miss bats.<\/p>\n
His high-velocity arsenal and collection of pitches that resemble those of a starting pitcher could make him an intriguing bullpen weapon. Even better for Philadelphia, Kilian remains under team control through the 2031 season.<\/p>\n
There are certainly areas where the Phillies could have done more at this year’s trade deadline. However, the failure to reunite with Hoffman shouldn’t be viewed as a major bullpen mistake.<\/p>\n
Bringing Hoffman back to Philadelphia would have been an exciting storyline, but Dombrowski ultimately found other quality options to strengthen the relief corps. With Raley, Kilian, Duran and the rest of the bullpen available, Philadelphia still enters the stretch run with a considerably improved group.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
