<\/p>\nThe Tennessee Volunteers have added another important piece to their roster, securing a transfer commitment from former Vanderbilt center Jalen Washington after he received approval to compete in a fifth collegiate season under the NCAA’s updated age-based eligibility rules.<\/p>\n

Washington’s arrival addresses one of Tennessee’s biggest concerns entering the upcoming campaign depth in the frontcourt. Although the Volunteers brought in a strong transfer class earlier in the offseason, the team was still searching for additional size and experience in the paint.<\/p>\n

Before Washington committed, Tennessee’s primary options at center included former Loyola Chicago standout Miles Rubin, ex-VCU big man Christian Fermin, and 6-foot-9 transfer Brendan Lue from Kennesaw State. Rubin and Fermin are both expected to compete for the starting role, but Fermin is currently recovering from a fractured hand that forced him to miss the final weeks of the team’s summer workouts. Despite the setback, the coaching staff remains optimistic that he will be ready for the regular season.<\/p>\n

Washington brings a different physical profile to the rotation. Standing 6-foot-10 and weighing approximately 240 pounds, he provides the size and strength Tennessee lacked compared to its other frontcourt options. His presence could prove especially valuable against the powerful interior lineups found throughout the SEC.<\/p>\n

Last season at Vanderbilt, Washington started nine games and delivered solid production, averaging 8.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game. He also shot an efficient 61.8% from inside the arc and converted 74% of his free throws, demonstrating both scoring efficiency and reliability at the foul line.<\/p>\n

His offensive numbers compare favorably with former Tennessee center Felix Okpara, who connected on 61% of his two-point attempts last season. While replacing Okpara’s defensive impact will be no easy task, Washington’s shot-blocking ability and physical presence give the Volunteers another dependable option in the middle.<\/p>\n
