Aston Villa have been forced to deal with another major change to their squad after England international central defender Ezri Konsa completed his move away from Villa Park.
Konsa’s departure brought an end to his seven-year spell with the club. The defender joined Arsenal in August 2026 in a deal worth £51 million, with a further £4 million potentially available in add-ons. He signed a four-year contract with an option for an additional season.
The transfer represented a significant moment for Villa, with Konsa having become an important part of the club’s defence since arriving from Brentford in 2019. He made 286 appearances for Aston Villa before beginning a new chapter with Arsenal.
Konsa’s move came during a dramatic summer of change at Villa Park. Several prominent members of the squad departed, prompting manager Unai Emery and the club’s recruitment team to rebuild the team ahead of the new campaign.
For Arsenal, meanwhile, the signing was viewed as an important defensive addition. The Premier League champions moved for Konsa while dealing with injuries to William Saliba and Jurriën Timber, giving manager Mikel Arteta another experienced option at centre-back.
Konsa himself made clear that his ambitions remain firmly focused on winning. Following the move, he described joining Arsenal as a proud moment for himself and his family and said he was determined to help the club achieve further success.
For Aston Villa supporters, however, seeing a player who had spent years at the heart of the defence move on represents another emotional chapter in what has been a remarkable period of squad transformation.
The question now is how Villa’s reshaped defence will cope without one of its long-serving central figures. With the club having already brought in Taylor Harwood-Bellis and other new players during the summer rebuild, attention has quickly turned toward how Emery will reorganize his defensive unit.
Konsa’s departure may therefore be remembered not simply as another transfer, but as one of the defining moments in Aston Villa’s major squad transformation of 2026.
