Breaking News: Red Sox Get Major Injury Update: Garrett Crochet’s Timeline Revealed as Tanner Houck Starts Rehab Assignment

Red Sox Receive Major Injury Updates on Garrett Crochet and Tanner Houck

The Boston Red Sox have received encouraging updates on two important pitchers as the team prepares for the postseason.

Garrett Crochet has made significant progress in his recovery after beginning a throwing program in August. While Crochet is expected to return as a reliever rather than a starter, his potential availability could provide Boston with a major boost during the playoffs.

According to recent reports, Crochet’s recovery timeline could allow him to return in time for the first round of the postseason. Boston is currently positioned to potentially face the New York Yankees, making the left-hander’s return especially valuable against a powerful lineup.

However, Crochet is unlikely to participate in a traditional minor-league rehab assignment. The Triple-A season is expected to end before he is ready to appear in a game, meaning he could be activated without a formal rehab outing.

Crochet remains confident that he can contribute effectively from the bullpen without a rehab assignment. He previously experienced a similar situation early in his professional career, when he made his major-league debut as a reliever and eventually joined the Chicago White Sox’s playoff roster.

Tanner Houck Begins Rehab Assignment

The Red Sox are also moving closer to welcoming Tanner Houck back to the active roster.

Houck, who has been sidelined while recovering from UCL reconstruction surgery, is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs on September 8.

His first outing is expected to feature a pitch limit of approximately 20 pitches. That workload is scheduled to increase to around 40–45 pitches during his second rehab appearance on September 11.

Like Crochet, Houck is expected to return to Boston’s bullpen rather than the starting rotation.

Getting both pitchers back before the postseason could significantly strengthen the Red Sox pitching staff. However, their abbreviated preparation periods mean Boston will need to carefully manage their workloads as they approach a potential playoff return.

If both Crochet and Houck complete their final stages of recovery successfully, their return could provide the Red Sox with two valuable arms at a crucial point in the season.
