Mariners Remain Hopeful Pitcher Can Avoid IL After Shoulder Discomfort
Seattle Mariners right-hander Bryan Woo may avoid a stint on the injured list despite experiencing discomfort in his throwing shoulder.
Woo first felt the issue during last Sunday’s win over the Houston Astros, in which he allowed two runs over six innings. Seattle then delayed his scheduled Saturday start while the team assessed his condition and determined the safest path for his return.

Kade Anderson is set to take Woo’s place against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, making his major league debut. The Mariners’ top prospect has been dominant at Double-A Arkansas, posting a 1.06 ERA and 0.64 WHIP with 135 strikeouts in 93⅓ innings. He has also issued just 13 walks while limiting opposing hitters to a .147 batting average.
According to MLB.com’s latest Mariners injury update, Woo is dealing with right shoulder discomfort and does not yet have a timetable for his return. His Aug. 22 start was pushed back by at least two days as the club continues to evaluate him.
The situation remains encouraging for Seattle, however. Manager Dan Wilson indicated that the team is optimistic Woo can avoid the injured list and may only need to miss his next scheduled start.
Woo has not undergone imaging on the shoulder, which the Mariners view as another positive sign while they monitor his condition.
