The future of West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has become a major talking point among cricket supporters, following renewed attention on the team’s performances and its difficult path toward the next 50-over World Cup.
However, despite claims circulating online that Sammy has officially stepped down, there is currently no confirmation from Cricket West Indies that he has resigned or been removed from his position. In fact, CWI’s latest official squad announcement, published on September 19, 2026, lists Sammy as the team’s head coach for the ongoing limited-overs tour of India.
The development comes during an important period for the Caribbean side. West Indies entered the India ODI series knowing that the first two matches would conclude the current automatic qualification cycle for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. CWI confirmed that, regardless of the results against India, West Indies would have to enter the ICC qualification tournament next year.
The first ODI in Thiruvananthapuram ended with India defeating West Indies by eight wickets after West Indies posted 295 for 7.
Despite that result, Sammy publicly spoke before the series about using the India tour to assess the team and continue developing players for the future. CWI has also described the current programme as part of a longer-term effort to build a stronger core ahead of future global tournaments.
Sammy was appointed head coach across all formats in December 2024 after previously leading the white-ball teams. CWI highlighted improvements under his leadership, including an ODI series victory over Bangladesh and progress in the T20I rankings.
For now, therefore, reports of an official resignation should be treated cautiously. No official CWI announcement confirming Sammy’s departure has been found. The West Indies remain scheduled to play their second ODI against India on September 30, followed by the third ODI on October 3 and a five-match T20I series.
Any confirmed decision regarding Sammy’s position would be expected to come through Cricket West Indies or another authoritative source.
