Red Sox Shut Out Orioles 5-0 as Sonny Gray Earns MLB-Leading 17th Win
BALTIMORE — Sonny Gray delivered another outstanding performance on Saturday night, pitching seven strong innings to lead the Boston Red Sox to a convincing 5-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
Gray allowed just three hits while striking out seven and walking three, improving his record to 17-4 and taking sole possession of the Major League Baseball wins lead. He moved ahead of Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cristopher Sánchez in the race for the most victories.
Although Gray allowed Baltimore to put runners on base in five different innings, the right-hander avoided serious damage. His biggest challenge came in the third inning, when the Orioles threatened to score. Boston catcher Connor Wong helped end the danger by tagging out Colton Cowser at home plate on a fielder’s choice.
Boston’s offense then took control late in the game.
Eli White delivered a two-run single against Orioles starter Chris Bassitt in the sixth inning, while Wong added another RBI single as the Red Sox scored three times in the inning.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa provided further insurance in the seventh, driving in two runs with a double as Boston completed its second consecutive shutout victory over Baltimore.
The win gave the Red Sox a 3-0 lead in the series and improved their record to 78-65. Boston remained in possession of the second American League wild-card position while strengthening its position in the playoff race.
Baltimore fell to 69-74 and suffered its fifth straight defeat. The Orioles went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and continued to struggle offensively after recently climbing back to the .500 mark.
With the loss, Baltimore remained three games behind Cleveland for the final AL wild-card spot, with Texas and Toronto also ahead of them in the standings.
Boston will look to complete a four-game sweep in Sunday’s series finale. Red Sox rookie left-hander Payton Tolle is scheduled to start for Boston, while Baltimore is expected to counter with right-hander Kyle Bradish.
Gray’s latest performance further highlighted his importance to Boston’s postseason push, as the veteran starter continues to provide the Red Sox with dominant outings at a crucial point in the season.
