Mariners Expected to Make $8 Million Decision on All-Star Reliever
The Seattle Mariners are facing an important decision regarding their bullpen this offseason, with the team reportedly likely to exercise an $8 million club option on two-time All-Star reliever Andrés Muñoz for the 2027 season.
Muñoz has struggled significantly during the 2026 campaign, raising questions about whether Seattle would consider moving on from the veteran right-hander. However, his previous success and relatively affordable contract option could make bringing him back the most logical choice for the Mariners.

According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Seattle is expected to pick up Muñoz’s $8 million option despite his difficult season.
Given the current market for high-quality late-inning relievers, Muñoz’s contract represents a reasonable investment for the Mariners. Even after his struggles this year, he remains an important part of Seattle’s bullpen.
The 27-year-old enters September with a 4.35 ERA and a 91 ERA+, both the worst marks of his MLB career. He has also posted -0.1 bWAR through 52 appearances.
Still, Muñoz’s 2026 struggles come after several successful seasons as one of Seattle’s most reliable late-inning arms. His track record suggests that this could be an isolated down season rather than the beginning of a permanent decline.
The Mariners could explore the relief-pitching market this offseason, but replacing Muñoz would carry its own risks. Free-agent and trade options are unpredictable, and Seattle could potentially move on from Muñoz only to watch him rebound elsewhere.
At just 27 years old and with two All-Star selections on his résumé, Muñoz remains a valuable asset. If he can return to his previous form in 2027, the Mariners could benefit significantly from keeping him in the bullpen.
For now, exercising the $8 million club option appears to be the most sensible path for Seattle. If Muñoz continues to struggle next season, the Mariners could revisit their options afterward.
