JUST IN: Chicago Cubs Announce Major Dansby Swanson Decision During Cardinals Game

The Chicago Cubs have announced an injury update on shortstop Dansby Swanson after the veteran infielder was forced to leave Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Swanson exited during the bottom of the third inning after an awkward swing-and-miss against Cardinals starter Hunter Dobbins. The Cubs subsequently announced that Swanson was dealing with left-side discomfort.

The veteran shortstop appeared to twist awkwardly following the swing before stepping away from the batter’s box. He briefly spoke with manager Craig Counsell and members of the training staff before leaving the game.

James Triantos entered as Swanson’s replacement, with Nico Hoerner expected to move over to shortstop.

Cubs Suddenly Face Swanson Uncertainty

The timing of the injury is particularly concerning for Chicago. Swanson has been an everyday presence at shortstop and remains an important part of the Cubs’ defensive structure.

The 32-year-old entered Sunday’s matchup having recorded 18 home runs and 66 RBIs during the 2026 campaign, according to reporting surrounding the game.

His offensive production has also provided valuable depth toward the bottom of Chicago’s lineup. Earlier this week, Swanson contributed a home run and RBI double during Chicago’s 12-6 victory over Washington.

Now, the Cubs will have to wait for further evaluation to determine the severity of Sunday’s injury.

Cardinals Game Adds More Drama

Swanson’s departure came during an already intense series against St. Louis.

The Cardinals entered the weekend after Joshua Báez made MLB history Saturday by becoming the first player ever to hit three home runs in his debut, powering St. Louis to an 8-4 victory over Chicago.

Sunday’s game has therefore carried plenty of attention, but Swanson’s unexpected exit has added another storyline for Cubs fans.

The immediate concern will be whether the left-side discomfort proves minor enough for Swanson to avoid an extended absence. For now, the Cubs have not announced a definitive diagnosis or timetable for his return.

Chicago will likely provide additional information after Swanson undergoes further evaluation.

For a team competing in the National League playoff race, losing a starting shortstop for any significant period could create a major challenge. Swanson’s defense, experience and everyday presence make him difficult to replace.

For now, Cubs fans will be hoping the announcement represents a temporary setback rather than the beginning of another lengthy injury absence.
