Sunderland supporters have been confronted with a startling claim circulating online involving defender Nordi Mukiele, with some posts alleging that the player has been suspended after supposedly testing positive for a banned substance.
However, there is currently no credible confirmation of such a suspension or a positive test involving Mukiele.
Recent available records tell a very different story. Mukiele played the full 90 minutes for Sunderland in their 2–0 Premier League defeat to Arsenal on September 12, 2026. He was also involved in Sunderland’s previous league matches against Fulham and Brentford.
The defender has been an important part of Sunderland’s squad since joining the club, and current player information lists him as a Sunderland defender with a contract running through June 2029.
The timing of the rumour has nevertheless created understandable concern among supporters, particularly because Sunderland are competing on multiple fronts this season. Current reports list Mukiele as part of the squad ahead of Sunderland’s Europa League meeting with AZ Alkmaar on September 16.
No confirmed positive test
A claim that a professional footballer has failed a drug test is extremely serious and should not be treated as established fact without confirmation from an authoritative source such as the club, the relevant football authorities or an official anti-doping organisation.
At the time of writing, no such confirmation has been identified in the reliable reports reviewed for this article.
That means supporters should be cautious about social-media posts or headlines claiming that Mukiele has already been suspended.
Sunderland supporters waiting for clarity
Mukiele’s recent performances have made him a notable part of Sunderland’s defensive setup. Against Arsenal, he completed the match and was among Sunderland’s active players, even registering four shots and three crosses according to match reporting.
For now, the alleged suspension remains unverified.
If Sunderland or an appropriate sporting authority issues an official statement concerning Mukiele, that would provide the basis for reporting exactly what happened, including the nature of any alleged violation, the status of any investigation and whether a suspension has actually been imposed.
