Red Sox Get Key Bullpen Reinforcement Ahead of Yankees Doubleheader
The Boston Red Sox have received a significant boost to their pitching staff at an important point in their series against the New York Yankees.
Boston announced Saturday that right-handed reliever Garrett Whitlock has been reinstated from the 15-day injured list and will be available for the team’s day-night doubleheader at Yankee Stadium.
Whitlock had been sidelined since Aug. 10 because of right elbow inflammation. He recently threw a live batting-practice session and came through it without any reported problems, allowing the Red Sox to activate him ahead of Saturday’s two-game set.
The timing of his return could prove especially valuable for interim manager Chad Tracy.
Boston is scheduled to play at least 18 innings on Saturday, with the first game beginning at 1:05 p.m. ET and the second scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET. Managing the bullpen across two games in one day can be challenging, particularly when the pitching staff must remain prepared for another game the following day.
Whitlock gives the Red Sox another experienced option for the late innings and could help prevent the team from overusing its other relievers.
Whitlock Adds Flexibility to Boston’s Bullpen
When healthy, Whitlock has been one of Boston’s more dependable bullpen arms. His ability to pitch in the seventh or eighth inning, protect a narrow lead and record multiple outs gives Tracy additional flexibility.
That could become particularly important against the Yankees.
If Boston receives a strong start in Game 1, Whitlock could be used to handle a key portion of the middle-to-late innings before closer Aroldis Chapman takes over. If Tracy decides to save Whitlock for later, the right-hander could instead provide valuable support during the night game.
His return also gives Boston more freedom to manage its bullpen without repeatedly relying on the same pitchers in both games.
The Red Sox will have another rivalry matchup Sunday, making bullpen preservation a major priority throughout the weekend.
Whitlock’s availability could eventually help Boston return to a more familiar late-inning structure, with Chapman handling the ninth inning and Whitlock being deployed against the toughest part of opposing lineups.
Red Sox Still Need Offensive Improvement
Boston entered Saturday with a 73-61 record after losing Friday’s series opener 1-0. The Red Sox trail the Yankees, who entered the day at 76-58, by three games.
While the return of Whitlock strengthens Boston’s pitching staff, the offense remains an area of concern.
The Red Sox have been shut out in consecutive games and will need to find a way to generate more offense against New York if they hope to make the most of Saturday’s doubleheader.
Boston has now added both Whitlock and Raymond Burgos to its roster for the two-game set.
Whitlock’s return may be just one roster move, but having another trusted reliever available for 18 innings could have a major impact on how the Red Sox navigate one of their most important weekends of the season.
