Kentucky Baseball continues to strengthen its roster as it prepares for the upcoming season, addressing the departures of several key players through the transfer portal. One of the Wildcats’ most significant additions is outfielder Alex Kelsey, who chose Kentucky over Clemson, according to KSR.
With Ryan Schwartz entering the transfer portal and outfielders Carson Hansen, Will Marcy, and Scott Campbell Jr. exhausting their eligibility, Kentucky faced a pressing need to rebuild its outfield depth. Additionally, the future of Jayce Tharnish and Braxton Van Cleave remains uncertain as both are eligible for the MLB Draft.
Kelsey’s arrival provides an immediate boost to the Wildcats. Far from being a stopgap solution, he is regarded as one of the top available players in the portal and brings an impressive offensive skill set to Lexington.
A Proven Offensive Threat
During the 2026 season at Saint Joseph’s, Kelsey posted a remarkable .373 batting average, a .489 on-base percentage, and a .507 slugging percentage while stealing 22 bases. These numbers demonstrate his ability to consistently reach base and create scoring opportunities.
His production compares favorably with the statistical profiles of many MLB Draft prospects. Beyond his hitting ability, Kelsey embodies the aggressive and disciplined offensive approach that Kentucky head coach Nick Mingione values.
One notable statistic is Kelsey’s toughness at the plate. He was hit by pitches 19 times while striking out only 27 times throughout the season. Kentucky has built a reputation for forcing opposing pitchers into mistakes, and Kelsey’s willingness to battle in the batter’s box aligns perfectly with that philosophy.
Kentucky’s Growing Transfer Class
Kelsey joins a strong group of incoming transfer additions:
* OF Brody Chrisman (Akron)
* OF Alex Kelsey (Saint Joseph’s)
* INF Owen Lee (Tennessee Tech)
* RHP Mason Snyder (Western Carolina)
* UTIL JP Peltier (Wright State)
* LHP Kale Hammer (Seattle University)
* RHP Logan Hastings (Maryland)
* RHP PJ Craig (Rider)
Combined with 12 incoming high school and junior college recruits, Kentucky is assembling a roster capable of competing at a high level in the SEC.

Looking Ahead
Coach Nick Mingione still faces important roster decisions, particularly if highly regarded multi-sport athlete Matt Ponatoski chooses professional baseball over college. Nevertheless, Kentucky has made significant progress in strengthening several key positions.
As transfer portal activity continues across college baseball, the Wildcats appear well-positioned for the future, with each new addition helping build a deeper and more competitive roster.
