Cubs Fall to Brewers in Extra-Inning Heartbreaker Despite Strong Offensive Effort
The Chicago Cubs suffered a heartbreaking extra-inning defeat against the Milwaukee Brewers after surrendering a late lead and ultimately falling in a walk-off finish.
Chicago appeared to be in position to secure the victory after Carson Kelly delivered a clutch two-run double, giving the Cubs a late advantage. Seiya Suzuki also provided a strong offensive performance, while Matt Shaw and Pete Crow-Armstrong continued to make important contributions.
However, the Cubs were unable to close out the game in the ninth inning. Jacob Webb took the mound with Chicago protecting its lead, but Milwaukee rallied to tie the game and force extra innings.
The Brewers carried that momentum into the additional frames and eventually produced the decisive run, handing the Cubs a frustrating loss and putting them in danger of being swept.
The bullpen’s inability to protect the late lead emerged as the biggest concern for Chicago. After an encouraging offensive effort, the Cubs once again found themselves on the wrong side of a game that appeared to be within their control.
With the series finale approaching, Chicago will look to regroup quickly and avoid a sweep against Milwaukee.
Seiya Suzuki, Matt Shaw, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Carson Kelly remain key pieces of the Cubs’ offense, but the team will need more consistency from its bullpen if it hopes to make a strong push down the stretch.
