Mariners Stage Dramatic Late Comeback to Shock Rangers After Surviving deGrom
SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners overcame a dominant performance from Jacob deGrom with a stunning late rally Thursday, defeating the Texas Rangers 4-3.
DeGrom was nearly untouchable through the first five innings, retiring his first 15 batters and striking out 12. The veteran right-hander allowed his first hit when Cole Young lined a single off his raised glove to lead off the sixth inning.
The two-time Cy Young Award winner finished with one hit allowed, one walk and 12 strikeouts over six scoreless innings. It was his highest strikeout total since September 2022, when he was with the New York Mets.
Texas carried a 3-0 lead into the seventh inning, but Seattle suddenly turned the game around.
Randy Arozarena opened the inning after being hit by a pitch from Jakob Junis. Dominic Canzone followed with an RBI single before Cal Raleigh added another single, setting the stage for Julio Rodríguez.
Rodríguez wasted no time, crushing Junis’ first-pitch sinker for a go-ahead three-run homer. The blast, his 21st home run of the season, completed a four-run seventh inning and gave Seattle a 4-3 advantage.
The Mariners held on from there to secure an important comeback victory over their division rivals.
The loss dropped Texas three games behind the American League West-leading Houston Astros and two games behind the final AL wild-card position. Seattle remains five games behind the Rangers for the final wild-card spot.
Seattle’s comeback was a reminder that even a dominant pitching performance can unravel quickly when an opponent finds its opening late in the game.
