The Philadelphia Phillies have made another roster move ahead of their upcoming series against the St. Louis Cardinals, parting ways with catcher Payton Henry after a brief return to the organization’s major-league roster.
Philadelphia designated Henry for assignment on Aug. 3 as the club worked to create roster space following its trade-deadline moves. The Phillies subsequently outrighted him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Aug. 6, allowing the catcher to remain in the organization.
Although the move was initially described as a release, the transaction ultimately resulted in Henry being sent outright to the IronPigs rather than becoming a free agent.
Henry had only recently joined the Phillies’ major-league club. Philadelphia selected his contract from Lehigh Valley on July 24 after injuries to Garrett Stubbs and Rafael Marchán created a need for additional catching depth. He was later optioned back to Triple-A on July 28 before being designated for assignment on Aug. 3.
The 29-year-old catcher—despite being described in some reports as 24—has spent much of his professional career moving between organizations and the minor leagues. Philadelphia originally signed him to a minor-league contract in December 2024. After reaching free agency following the 2025 season, Henry signed with the New York Yankees before returning to the Phillies organization on another minor-league deal in July 2026.
Henry’s latest stint in Philadelphia came at a time when the club needed experienced catching depth. He has previous Major League experience with the Miami Marlins, appearing in 20 games between 2021 and 2022. His major-league career includes a .186 batting average, while his minor-league experience has been considerably more extensive.
At Triple-A in 2026, Henry was hitting .207 with an OPS of .523 according to Minor League Baseball’s current statistics.
The roster decision comes as the Phillies prepare for an important series against the Cardinals. Philadelphia enters the matchup having avoided a sweep by the Toronto Blue Jays with a dramatic 7-6, 12-inning victory on Sunday. Derek Hill delivered the game-winning RBI, while Kyle Schwarber hit two home runs.
The Cardinals, meanwhile, are also entering the series with momentum. St. Louis defeated the Colorado Rockies 7-4 on Sunday, with rookie JJ Wetherholt delivering a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning. The victory moved the Cardinals to .500 and left them 3.5 games behind Philadelphia and Arizona in the NL Wild Card race.
With the postseason race tightening, Philadelphia’s latest roster maneuver highlights the importance of maintaining enough depth behind the plate while managing its 40-man roster. Henry’s outright assignment gives the Phillies another experienced option in the minors should the organization need catching help later in the season.
For now, the Phillies will turn their attention toward St. Louis, with the Cardinals arriving as one of the teams attempting to close the gap in the National League Wild Card race.
